Before I went to college and chose the degree that I wanted to major in, I discovered the world of Commercial art. Graphic design etc….
I loved the idea that I can make a living being an artist. That is exactly how I ended up studying graphic design. Even though given the opportunity, every time I could chose an elective I would take another fine arts course.
While I was a student at the Maryland Institute College of Art; most of the fine art students did not like the students that were studying interior design or graphic design. They would say that they didn’t believe in art for money.
The problem is, no matter how good a fine artist you are, if you do not know how to sell yourself and your work, then how do you survive?
Many of my friends, who did study fine arts, ended up bussing tables as a career starter.
In our graphic design world, or commercial art; the scope of projects we can work on is vast. We can be designing a logo, all the way to designing a billboard for trucks etc….
Graphic designers as whole, learn to sell themselves and sell their work. They have to be very flexible and very accommodating. They learn to be self motivators and rely on themselves.
We live in a world where things change all the time. We went from using ruling pens to draw straight lines. Or using lettraset and rub downs to develop our concepts. To now highly sophisticated programs and printers etc….
But our world is a constant change. Our tools are constantly changing. Our design challenges are also changing. That is what I love the most about what I do.
Never a boring day at the office! Never two days the same.
